Mail checks

Mail checks

FortiMonitor offers a number of network checks to monitor the various layers of an enterprise mail system. All mail protocols support a TLS/SSL enabled connection as well.

POP Check Configuration

Select POP from the monitoring catalog.

Choose from one of the below options for the POP network checks.

  • POP Delivery Time

  • POP Port

  • POP Session

  • POP Secure Delivery Time

  • Secure POP Port

  • Secure POP Session

POP Delivery Time

POP Delivery Time track the time it takes for an email sent from one of our checkers to be delivered to your inbox. The general POP Delivery Time checks operate over port 110, secure POP Delivery time checks operate over port 995. Each requires a special configuration in the POP Email Options tab.

POP Port Check

POP Port checks ensure that the POP Port is available for connections.
General POP Port checks operate over port 110, while secure POP Port checks are run against port 995.

POP Session Check

POP Session checks monitor the POP service to ensure that a session can be established. The general POP Session checks operate over port 110, and secure POP Session checks operate over port 995. There are also specialized POP Email Options that require additional configuration.

IMAP Check Configuration

Select IMAP from the monitoring catalog.

There are a few options to choose from.

  • IMAP Delivery Time

  • IMAP Port

  • IMAP Session

  • IMAP Secure Delivery Time

  • Secure IMAP Port

  • Secure IMAP Session

IMAP Delivery Time

The delivery time check allows you to test the time it takes for an email to go from our checkers to your mailbox. There is a special configuration required for this check that can be found in the IMAP Email Options tab.

General IMAP Delivery Time checks operate over port 143.

Secure IMAP Delivery Time checks operate over port 993.

IMAP Port

This check monitors port 143 to see if it is available to receive connections.

Secure IMAP Port checks operate over port 993.

IMAP Session

This check also uses special configuration to test establishing a session with your IMAP server. These specifications can be found under the IMAP Email Options tab.

Secure IMAP Session checks operate over port 993.

SMTP Check Configuration

Select SMTP from the monitoring catalog.

There are a couple of options for network checks.

  • SMTP Port

  • SMTP Session

  • Secure SMTP Port

  • Secure SMTP Session

SMTP Port

This check monitors the availability of port 25 and notifies you when it becomes unavailable.

SMTP Session

An SMTP Session check allows you to test establishing a session with your SMTP server to ensure functionality.

Secure SMTP Port

Secure SMTP Port checks operate over port 465.

Secure SMTP Session

Secure SMTP Session checks operate over port 465.

The Secure SMTP Port and Session checks use an encrypted connection at the transport layer. If you want to monitor the SMTP Submission services that commonly run on port 587, you should use the SMTP check and set the port to 587.
