High availability (HA)

High availability (HA)

  • Implement high availability (HA) mode in FortiManager so that in the event that the Primary FortiManager fails, a Secondary FortiManager will be promoted as the new Primary to limit service interruption. See High Availability.

Automatic (VRRP) failover

Use automatic (VRRP) failover mode to ensure a seamless transition during failover.

  • VRRP mode defines a peer interface and monitored interface for each cluster device, as well as a shared VIP. When the monitored interface for the Primary FortiManager is down, HA failover automatically occurs to the Secondary device using the same shared VIP, and the FGFM protocol is automatically routed to the Secondary device's peer interface.
  • Configure the Priority setting to determine which devices will be acting as the Primary and Secondary in the HA configuration. See Configuring HA options.
  • The diagram below demonstrates an example FortiManager HA configuration using VRRP mode.

Geographic redundancy

  • In order to increase resiliency, implement geographic redundancy when clustering FortiManager devices by situating your FortiManager devices in locations that are not affected by the same conditions, such as power outages or floods.
