Deployment files

The image files for FortiGate-VMX products are found on the Fortinet Customer Service & Support site.

Product binaries are available for download from support.fortinet.com.

After logging into the Fortinet Support site, go to Download in the menu bar. From the dropdown menu, select VM Images.In the Select Product field, choose FortiGate. In the Select Platform field, choose VMWare NSX. You can now select the version you want. For example, if you choose version 6.0.3, you have the option to download the following files:

  • For a new deployment, the file names are as follows:
    • FortiGate VMX Service Manager: FGT_VM64_SVM-v6-build0200-FORTINET.out.ovf.zip
    • FortiGate VMX Security Nodes: FGT_VM64_VMX-v6-build0200-FORTINET.out.ovf.zip
  • For upgrading from an older version, the file names are as follows:
    • FortiGate VMX Service Manager: FGT_VM64_SVM-v6-build0200-FORTINET.out
    • FortiGate VMX Security Nodes: FGT_VM64_VMX-v6-build0200-FORTINET.out

The new deployment files have the extension ".out.ovf.zip" while the upgrade files have the extension ".out".

Consider also downloading are the checksums for verification of file integrity, as well as the release notes for the FortiGate firmware version that you downloaded.

SVM files

The SVM zip file contains the following:

FortiGate-VMX-Service-Manager.ovf

OVF template file used in the installer.

fortios.vmdk

FortiGate-VMX SVM system hard disk in VDMK format.

datadrive.vmdk

FortiGate-VMX SVM log disk in VMDK format. Not used.

Place the contents of the FortiGate VMX Service Manager package in a folder on the computer that you will be doing the deployment from.

Security node files

The VMX security node zip file contains the following:

OVF template file.

fortios.vmdk

FortiGate-VMX security node system hard disk in VDMK format.

datadrive.vmdk

FortiGate-VMX security node log disk in VMDK format. Not used.

Place the contents of the the FortiGate-VMX Security Node package on a web server that can be accessed by the VMware NSX Manager for generating new instances of the security node.

You can edit the. ovf files to change the CPU and RAM sizes.

The SVM and VMX versions must be the same. Combining different versions makes firewall policies non-functional.

Placing FortiGate-VMX security node files on the web server

There are no special requirements for placing the files on the web server other than making sure the access and permissions allow files to be downloaded by the use of a URL. Placing the files on the web server is important because deployment cannot occur if the files are not there.
