Assign Alert Timelines

There are several types of Alert Timelines that you can assign to instances either from the Instance Details page or the Templates. The following Alert Timelines are available:

Primary Alert Timeline

The primary Alert Timeline used for the instance's incidents.

To assign a primary Alert Timeline, perform the following steps:

  1. From the Details tab of the Instance Details page or a template, click Alert Timeline.

  2. The Monitoring Configuration drawer will slide out.

  3. From the Primary Alert Timeline module, choose an Alert Timeline.

  4. Click Save Changes.

Agent Heartbeat Alert Timeline

The Agent Heartbeat Alert Timeline determines which alert timeline to send alerts to when no communication is received from the FortiMonitor Agent for a specified amount of time.

To assign an Agent Heartbeat Alert Timeline, perform the following steps:

  1. From the Details tab of the Instance Details page or a template, click Alert Timeline.

    The Monitoring Configuration drawer will slide out.

  2. From the Agent Heartbeat Alert Timeline module, configure the following:

  • Create an incident.

  • Set the time in minutes in which no communication is received before an incident is created.

  • Severity of the incident.

  • Select which Alert Timeline to send alerts to when no communication is received from the FortiMonitor Agent.

  • Whether to include the incident in availability calculations.​

4. Click Save Changes.

Metric Heartbeat Alert Timeline

The Metric Heartbeat Alert Timeline determines which Alert Timeline to send alerts to when no communication is received from one or more metrics configured on the instance. Alerts are not triggered for:

  • metrics that are paused

  • metrics under maintenance

  • metrics on an instance which have an active Agent Heartbeat incident

Currently, metric heartbeat checks are run every 60 minutes.

The Metric Heartbeat Alert Timeline feature is not enabled by default. If you do not see this feature, please contact our support team to have it enabled.

  1. From the Details tab of the Instance Details page or a template, click Alert Timeline.


  2. The Monitoring Configuration drawer will slide out.

  3. From the Agent Heartbeat Alert Timeline module, configure the following:

  • Enable or disable the Create an incident when a metric stops reporting option.

  • Select which Alert Timeline to send alerts to when a metric stops reporting.

  • Severity type

4. Click Save Changes.

5. After saving the changes, incidents will be created for any metric currently not reporting data.

SNMP Heartbeat Alert Timeline

The SNMP Heartbeat Alert Timeline determines which alert timeline to send alerts to when no communication is received from SNMP polling.

To assign an SNMP Heartbeat Alert Timeline, perform the following steps:

  1. From the Details tab of the Instance Details page or a template, click Alert Timeline.

  2. The Monitoring Configuration drawer will slide out.

  3. From the SNMP Heartbeat Alert Timeline module, configure the following:

  • Create an incident.

  • Set the time in minutes in which no communication is received from SNMP polling before an incident is created.

  • Select which Alert Timeline to send alerts to when no communication is received from SNMP polling.

4. Click Save Changes.
